AMAZON-PUTUMAYO ARTICLES
From the times of the Conquest to current times, whoever travels to Putumayo
becomes awed by the beauty of the Sibundoy Valley.
Its magic comes not
only from the landscape with rivers, volcanic peaks, flowers, trees, birds and
other living creatures but from its horizon surrounded by the majesty of the
Andes and the wilderness of the nearby Amazon jungle.
In harmony with this
place, the Kamentsá, Siona and many other indigenous communities inhabit
this beautiful region.
For them, beadwork is a quintessential
form of expression.
Glass beads were not used until the colonists brought them from Europe 500
years ago, but they quickly became part of Indigenous cultures.
Today
glass beads, particularly fine seed beads, are the primary
materials for traditional beaders of many tribes.
Beading is
not simple. In fact, it can take several months to complete
a single beadwork.
Their beadwork designs include animals, trees, rivers and stars that represent
sacred spirits that inhabit the Universe. Each piece is beautifully created with
a unique design.
